The Beauty Of Wolves

When I see a wolf in a picture, first thing that comes up to my mind is the story about the “Little Red Riding Hood”. But when I look into these photos, I see more than evil wolf from the bed time story. I see cute creatures worth living… Do you see that, too?

This is one sided bull-LOVE-. Comparing Lambeau to the Camp Nou is like comparing a high school to a university. Why don’t you use the new Dallas Cowboys stadium. Beatles vs Eagles!?!?!?!?!?!? Elvis DUH!!! He is a much better representative for America as far as music goes maybe even Micheal Jackson aside from his kid diddling accusations was a better rep for the US than the F’ing Eagles.

I don’t like this choices, we have better things in Europe. We have in europe also taller statue then is a french Statue of Liberty in New York(151 ft). They have the same statue now in French to, of the same size(proud French). That why I don’t understand why they compare Statue of Liberty and Eiffil tower, first the Statue of Liberty is not something unique, and Eiffil tower is not statue. This is Motherland statue(270 Feet) in Russian city Volgrad. Is not the tallest but is the most magnificent statue on the world.

Well, first of all, this article was a big fail to begin with. Anyone trying to compare Europe and the USA would have to consider writing a book. On top of that, Europe has a far more richer and longer history than the USA and thereby a lot more different cultures. Culture in the north of the USA is rather similar to the culture in the south, even though there are a few (small) differences. A person that travels to the other side of the country won’t have to face big cultural differences.
Europe isn’t united at all, definitely not cultural, economical, political,… Every European nation differs, has a different history, (in most cases) a different language, different political ideas, … Going to a neighbouring country means going to a different world. An element in France isn’t representative for the rest of Europe.
That’s the biggest and most common mistake made by most Americans, they see Europe as a whole, just like they think that all Middle-Eastern countries are the same and all Asian countries are the same…
And about Russia : Geographicly, Russia lies on both the European AND the Asian continent, but must be considered as a stand-alone country because of its cultural/social/… uniqueness.

What’s the point of these -LOVE- comparisons? The majority of them are unrelated and you don’t set any sort of merits, just rattle off useless facts about each one rather than comparing them. Have you ever written an essay where you argue a point or compare/contrast two things at once? Maybe it’s too difficult for you.

I agree with some things. But I don’t know way you want(you said “must be”) Russia considered like stand-alone country, but things are not like that. Russia is considered European country and this is FACT. Look at internet. It is like if spain have some territory down in africa, this do not men that Spain isnt an Europen country. So is absurd when you say it must be considered as a stand-alone country. We have also other countries they are on european and asian countinent.
“Europe isn’t united at all, definitely not cultural, economical, political,…”
You little misunderstood things. Is true that, but is also lot of historical and others similarities between difrent nations. Some languages are similar so we can understand them. Belarus, Bosnia, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech, Macedonia, Montenegro, Poland, Russia, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Ukraine are all slavic countries. So why you want to pull out Russia? Russia have a lot of things come with Europe(of course because is european country) and not a lot with Asia. Iseuropean country who has territory in Asia. And lot of these countries have similar history or been conectet with each others. I low educated(only 8 grades) but can talk 4 of languages of that countries and undrstand two others(undrstand also English and Spanish, litle portuguese and learning French and Italian). Iam slovenian, but I’M first european and then Slovenian.

Lots, actually. I currently have an American friend (from NY) who emigrated to Northern Ireland to be with his husband. I regularly bump into American ex-pats in England and, in fact, there are several famous Anglophile Americans like Bill Bryson who love living in England.

Maybe there aren’t so many Americans elsewhere in Europe, but that’s probably because of the language barrier.

Soccer in the US = football in the rest of the world.
I might have agreed with you when it comes to comparing totally different things, but in this case, the comparison is just obvious and right.
Same goes for bridges & even though both the Eiffel Tower and the Statue of Liberty were built by French architects, they are still different structures and stand for two separate countries so I think the comparison works as well.
And guess what: Napoleon invented the Code civil, which is a major text in French law. He definitely was a conqueror, but not only that. He also was the first man to think all the people of France should be united under the same law. I think that’s a different form of democracy than the one preached by George Washington but it’s democracy still.

Have you forgotten about the EU? Europe is united, even though every country has kept its particularities.
Europeans have a lot of culture in common, contrarily to what you may think. There have been tons of exchanges between the various courts in Europe and it wasn’t rare that an artist from one country worked in another. This sort of ties was particularly strong between France and Russia.
Europeans have one currency in the entirety of the Eurozone, which means they are united through currency as well as consumer prices. Same goes for politics thanks to the EU.
Lately, the exchanges have become so common that there’s not much change from one country to the next, except when it comes to language of course!

It’s funny that you think Russia isn’t in Europe when you are European yourself! Of course Russia is a part of Europe, even though it’s both in Europe and Asia. What somebody said a few pots up is right: Russia doesn’t feel like an Asian country at all (expect maybe for Siberia)! Get a map and check it for yourself!

    To MasterDuckie,
I think you’ve made the clearest point on this page. There are some very different cultures here in the USA but, for the most part, travelling across the country doesn’t feel like travelling to other countries. It seems disingenuous to try to compare the culture of a country that has existed as such for 234 years with carefully, although sometimes oddly, selected individual features of the many, often MUCH older, cultures of another continent.
(To Jenna – Calling it the European Union and having a common monetary unit doesn’t really unite the European countries…it just, one hopes, makes them less divided!)

Anyone who has never been exposed to other cultures is likely going to generalize other cultures because it makes them easier to understand. Europe has many different cultures in a relatively small area so almost all people have much more in depth knowledge of each because they come into contact with them on a daily basis. America is much more secluded and it takes a fair amount of money to go learn about others, therefore the people here are uneducated about other cultures. It is not a lack of intelligence, rather a lack of experience. Just as someone who majors in political science won’t know much about rocket science, but that doesn’t mean they are stupid, just ignorant about that subject. This also answers the question about why ignorant Americans are much more vocal about their “opinions.” Because the culture here is much more homogeneous, people believe their ideas must be THE right ones because they have never been opposed, whereas in Europe everyone is aware of everyone else and the presence of other ideas. So the stupid Americans won’t shut up but the Europeans will. That is Europe is perceived as smarter. So, though it may be offensive, at least they were trying to learn. Just set them straight and send them all their way. You should be annoyed at those who refuse to learn about or accept your or other cultures, not those who incorrectly inquire about it. This is all strictly my opinion and any additions or critics are welcome. The one thing I know is that I don’t know everything. I’m just trying to piece it all together.

Because people in America don’t live in Europe. Just as you are less likely to know the intricacies of borders in North America (though it isn’t very hard because there are only two major ones) we are less likely to know about Russian borders. Most Americans just look at the map and see that most of the land mass of Russia is in Asia, and assume that the entire country is. It is not critical information for the tipical American citizen, so many don’t know it. Though it is not an excuse for ignorance, it is the reason.

Err no they do not. The United Kingdom (Officially in the EU) keeps the Sterling Pound. I am from England and I have a very different culture to the French, Spanish, Portuguese, hell even the Welsh and Scots. I do not eat the same food, live the same life, speak the same language, have the same weather, same ethnicity, beliefs, laws, etc etc. Infact possibly the only thing I do share is the obvious human traits.

Also About Consumer prices. Fail… We do not share the same price on consumer goods. If I go to france I can buy different products in their entirety, and the same products that are of a different price. You’ve just proved yourself a moron, stop posting and jump off a cliff.

This is how idiotic and patriotic the majority of Americans are ay? Let’s compare Thailand to Europe now and see the consensus.

the US does not have the vast amount of cultural differences as Europe does, and this comparison is not needed. Americans need to take a geography class and actually find out about outside of Europe without stupid comparisons.

But not every American is a stupid dumbass, just unfortunately they seem to be the loudest ones of us all.
    It is most unfortunate.
But as I think it has been stated before, this comparison was very dumb in the first place. I mean really the Statue of Liberty was given to us by France. And there really is no comparing a single country to a continent, especially a continent that is so richly diverse. And America itself is highly influenced by the thoughts and architecture of Europe, from Western and Eastern Europe. I mean in Kansas City there is a whole plaza designed to look like Spain.Point is there are great things and ideas from all over the world, and comparing them and deciding who is better is very petty.

So much hate for Americans and their alleged “lack of education”, it really goes to show how petty and chauvinistic some of us Europeans can be. I was not born in the United States, but attended four years of high school, did a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree here. I flunked out of a law program in the U.S. because it was so hard, but had such an easy time obtaining it in Budapest. If Americans are so stupid, why do we Europeans choose Harvard, Yale, Cal Tech, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology over the best schools in our own countries, with our alleged better-read, more intelligent and worldly domestic professors?

Also, America has no culture of its own? Think on that when you wear your blue jeans, eat at your McDonald’s, watch your theatrical mega movies, read your popular American publications, and enjoy your constitutional republics. It is not the American that is without culture, it is the quintessential European who claims his culture is superior to others as theirs is consumed by that of the Americans. As Rammstein said once, with such contempt, “We’re all living in Amerika, Amerika ist wunderbar.”

Just stop. People like you are embarrassing Europe.

Agreed, I find Jemma is wrong about lack of cultural change across country boundaries. Additionally, you will find that not only are consumer prices different, but brand goods (that you may expect to be identical) may be different as well. The EU seems to mean very little once you get down to specific countries–and you must remember that some (very few, but they exist) very European countries are not member states of the EU at all. Switzerland, for example, right in the middle of the France-Germany-Italy loop.

I’m a U.S. citizen and I don’t think it’s fair to compare one country vs a continent.. but this country does have A LOT of things.. Okay, why did they put Belucci against Jolie? Olga Kurylenko is European, and much better looking, or Gemma Arterton, I mean, come on. Also, America has Jessica Alba, Jessica Biel. Just an idea. You do realize you just read a post from a Russian in YOUR language right? They speak your language, you don’t speak theirs. Americans would rather move to Canada, Australia, New Zealand or Great Britain, because that means they would not have to learn anything. Is Russia so great everyone should live there? No, but they sure as hell should not be underestimated, just because you feel America is ‘better’. Don’t forget who caused this economic recession with its stupidity, and dropped itsself and their allies into war for no reason.

And no ‘WMD’, or ‘evil dictator’ crap, North Korea HAS WMDs, their dictator is much worse, but they got no oil. So whatever, you be proud of America, whilst we try to live our lifes, mmkay?

I have been to America, and I have to say, where I have been was great, although I never understood the love for Nascar, but same goes for F1, which ain’t just American. However, America DID declare war on Afghanistan AND Iraq, AND that is a pretty damn good reason to dislike America. I got nothing against the people, I mean, we have one of the most racistic muslimhaters and he was running for president, no country is perfect.

However, yeah, you bombed relatively medieval countries back to the stone age, whilst all that money COULD have been spent much better. That is why I personally hated the Bush administration, and I guess people hang on to hate for a man that is no longer in control. Generalize the world and we will never have to go out and see how it really is. Humans are narrowminded, whether intentional or not.

I agree with you on the US vs. Australia-bit, but honestly? I have had those exact types of food you’re mentioning several times, and I’m Norwegian. (A fun-fact: I usually by Pho during my school lunch breaks.)We don’t necessarily find Americans to be ignorant or uneducated – on the contrary, many of the most influential people in the world are from the US – but seeing different cultures makes you understand your own, and since there are so many things inside the American borders, you can practically do whatever you want, without ever having to leave your country. Therefore, many (or at least a great deal of the ones who post comments on sites just like this one – though I’m not saying this applies to you) tend to think that things like democracy and freedom of speech are typical American ideas. On my last trip to the US (about two months ago) I was asked by no less than three people how I managed to sneak out of my home-country without the government noticing. At first, I didn’t understand at all what they were going on about, until I realized they thought Norway was ruled some sort of dictator. Also, they only asked me about my dictator after I informed them that Norway in fact isn’t the capital of Sweden. I know that it’s a relatively small and in many ways unimportant country, but come on!Btw, the movie Hostel brought about a great deal of complaints from the country of Slovakia. If I remember correctly, the filmmakers publicly apologized for the film, saying that they never tried to give a real description of the country, but merely chose a place they thought Americans wouldn’t know too much about. (To be perfectly honest, I’m not even sure you were serious about the latter parts of your comment, but chances are someone might be.)

Stop apologizing for being American just because of a Bush America chapter in our history. I hate that. Europe is just as ignorant and moronic as some Americans are and Europe joins in on every war we go to. Europeans have fooled the world that they are sophisticated, highly educated, cultured, and progressive while they don’t even know that their eastern countries are part of “their” Europe. And they clearly don’t know their own shameful history as they bash us for things the did for 500 years and join us in every battle we go into. They enjoy pointing out our redneck Americans but don’t even know about their 3rd world countries just across a mountain range or two. They are eager to jump on our “empire arrogance” yet forget they were the worst empires in history that destroyed EVERY unique culture they encountered. That destruction did not stop until America replaced them as the world’s power. Europe was destroying the world before America fought them for independence. We are not forcing our laws and taking real estate from anyone as the European’s did every where they went. We have contributed far more good than they could ever imagine while they day dream about their ancient culture (that was mostly made up of barbaric conditions for most of the people). They brag of “ancient” accomplishments and take credit for some of ours when in fact they stole many big ideas from ancient China, India, Middle East. There are far too many “American original” things to pick so just a few choice things off the top of my head. The world’s language is American…not English. It’s the first world language to ever exist. America invented about 10 new forms of music that the entire world embraces and imitates. The Beatles wanted to be Elvis and Buddy Holly then changed from that when they heard Bob Dylan then changed again when they heard Brian Wilson’s Pet Sounds (inspiration for Beatles hippy music). ALL British bands like the Beatles, Stones, Zepplin, Clapton, directly ripped off white and black artists in America, many times note for note. America was first to fly and within 70 years after that had visited every planet (Pluto doesn’t count but we’re going anyway) and one of those probes is at the edge of the solar system. Europe destroyed every great culture they encountered around the world when those cultures first met, yet they bad mouth us for our culture “forcing” itself onto the world when the world likes McDonald’s and Starbucks too. We forced democracy onto two worst evil empires in history (Japan and Germany who combined murdered about 50 million people in less than 10 years). Instead of taking them over like Europeans did whenever they fought someone, we helped them become the second and third largest economy in the world. We ended the empire of THE worst, the British Empire. And spanked the French and Spanish monarchy back to where they belonged when they tried their “royal” nonsense a few more times. Washington’s victory against British would be like Iraqi’s winning against Bush’s war machine. Had Washington had access to British military or Napoleon’s forces, he would have ended the war in a week. We invented civil rights, women’s rights, right’s for disabled people… man, the list just goes on and on. Europe is older, bigger land mass (duh, Eastern Europe counts you morons from “Europe”), 3 times as many people. We invented “movies”, blue jeans, cars, the internet (the backbone of WWW that was made possible with one European’s HTML language which was based on an Americans first attempt) and all these endless things they love too. Yet they hate us when we mention our pride when they try to label us garbage or ignorant. They like to focus on 8 years of Bush America yet forget they tortured the planet for 500 years or more. Never forget, my American friend, that Europe decimated Africa, Middle East, South America, Asia, Polynesia, Caribbean. They completely wiped out EVERY culture they encountered and their redrawing of the world’s map is directly responsible for the world wars and current tribal violence the world over. Many places they “discovered” were sent into extreme poverty and that poverty still exist today – it’s called “3rd world” and Europe is solely responsible for it. They are the ones who invented the institution of African slavery and brought it to the “new” world. They are the reason Gandhi had to embarrass them with no violence tactics. They are the reason India and Pakistan are enemies and why Afghanistan exists. The randomly drew up a map in the Middle East and set about 100% gauranteed tribal conflicts that are flaming today. They are the reason that Pacific Ocean island tribes will never again be the same unique cultures. They are the reason South America’s tribes nearly disappeared. They are the first people who went to war with the Native American tribes hundreds of years before America fought to free themselves from European oppression. Europe was where Hitler thrived (he had LOTS of allies) it wasn’t just him and a bunch of guys. Stalin and Lenin were born and raised in Europe. Ignorant Europeans never want to admit Russia was/is part of Europe. Those two nuts spread insane communism to 1.3 billion Chinese, Castro, Vietnam, North Korea where it still lingers today in embarrassing examples. China is the way it is because Europe (Russia and England) screwed it all up. Europe is where Serbs and Bosnians mass murdered each other on live tv, broadcast around the world, while the entire European community did absolutely zero to join forces and force Serbia to stop their cruelty (which Bosnias also engaged in as revenge acts). Then got angry when we rightfully bombed the Serbs into cowering fools who instantly gave up once they got what they had been giving. Don’t ever apologize for America. Whatever bad things we have, you can be sure Europe overflows in it. You think Iraq was a mistake? Iraq is Europe’s invention and mess long before Saddam showed up shaking Rumsfeld’s hand. Europeans did 500 years of that to the entire planet. Today, 40% of Spanish young adults can’t find work. Greece is a complete mess. Darker skinned people are facing violent episodes of racism in many “best countries to live” like Norway, Netherlands, Sweden. Obama could NEVER happen in Europe. Ireland, Iceland, Romania, Belarus, Ukraine, Estonia, and others aren’t exactly shining examples of financial responsibility nor do they have any real plan to compensate those they basically stole from when they got free funding for their fake 90s economies. Everyone likes to blame America it seems, and Europeans are the loudest voices of all. History books, which young Europeans don’t read anymore than American kids do, tells the real story. Europe goes down as THE worst group of people for what they did to EVERY other culture they encountered when they got a chance to be #1. Whether America now fades and falls away, nothing can ever change the extraordinary history it has had. No group of people has ever had a positive impact like America has had. It’s a place where every person on the planet has gone and been lifted up and contributed to society even with the bigotry that does exist in some still. Asia used to be a constant warring tribal zone for thousands of years. Europe too. America’s contribution to World War 2, followed up with peace keeping troops (still there today), ended all that in less than 5 years and helped build the frame work to their current “best countries to live in” status. It brought down the Soviet Union and gave modern Russia a chance to be free and a responsible world citizen (which they struggle to do). Europeans never miss a chance to say how stupid, resentful, and arrogant we are as they sing and dance to our music, watch our movies, wear our blue jeans, use our Mac and Windows operating systems. Don’t ever, ever apologize for being an American. Don’t ever be so pathetic that you say “Canadian” if someone in Europe asks you where you are from because you don’t want to be an American right now. Europeans would never do that and given their horrific history it should give you the ability to proudly say “American” when asked where you are from. If ever bothered about Bush America, just simply say “Europe wreaked havoc upon the world for 500 years. You ruined every cool tribal culture you ever encountered and robbed all of us a chance to experience it”.

You are wrong. According to Wikipedia, Europe’s land mass is 10,180,000 km2 and the US land mass is 9,826,675 km2. Furthermore, Greenland is NOT counted in this tally and Alaska IS for the U.S. and there is basically nothing there (the population is less than a million in Alaska). In case you wanted to bring up that “point,” I’ll save you the time.

Population-wise, Europe is estimated at 731,000,000 and the US population is 309,778,000 as of 2009 and 2010 respectively.

So no, this article is nearly void as it is neither fair, nor accurate to compare 1 country to an entire continent. Especially a continent that has had thousands of years to develop while America has only been in existence for 234 years. I think we’ve done pretty well for ourselves.

Also, at the end of the argument, you talk about jeans, Windows etc, but you forget that when you watch a movie on TV, you’re watching it on a Scottish invention. When you log on to your computer, you’re using an English invention. When you fly anywhere, the airplane is using a jet engine that was invented by an English aviator. When you insult Europe, you’re using the Queen’s English. Feel like making a phonecall? …I can go on all day.

George Washington helped with the creation of the US, Nappy helped revolutionize France but in the end you morons stuck him on an island. If he was such a hero why then was he exiled??? Also, the beatles and Elvis, come on. If you are trying to compare music you must look at the body of work. Elvis, Metalica, Britney Spears, New Kids on the Block, You must be kidding me. How many AMERICAN bands and musical artists tour every year in europe? A ton, now how many european musicians come here? I cant think of any. Terrible comparison. Why dont you compare national Monuments??? We have Mount Rushmore, what do you have…What’s left of the Berlin Wall. How biased can this be. I can guarantee someone NON-AMERICAN put this together.

I dunno… I’d say Monica Belucci wins, as does Moscow and Napoleon. Napoleon was a genius, Washington was more of a… people pleaser. And the Godfather to Snatch? Not even remotely a fair comparison. And Manhattan Melodrama is the best crime flick around anyway! That’s still a movie win for USA, though. Clark Gable was a pimp.

Whats that? The Beatles sold more records than Elvis Presley? Even in America. Stick to what you know, which, as you’re American, is probably very little. The Millau Viaduct is the tallest bridge in the world, and guess where it is. Europe.

Why dont you compare national Monuments?
You mean, Big Ben, Eiffel Tower, Leaning tower of Pisa, The Colosseum of Rome to name a few. All better than a rock with some ugly faces carved into it.

    Music.
No one in Europe has ever heard of New KIds on the Block. Besides, your artists don’t really tour Europe, just England. And when they go to countries that don’t have to steal some other ones language, nobody has a clue what they’re saying.

and that’s what makes europe so much better…you get a lot more for the same price…….but let’s be honest, usa doesn’t stand a chance…you can’t compare us with europe…all americans are americans, are proud to be american, are annoyingly nationalistic and it’s very easy to unite them all in a big fatty meatball in order to “save america”…europeans are not really european…they are russian or english or german or hungarian…or romanian or serbian or bosnian or even tatar or cossack or catalunian…or greek or turkish (european, culturally…..and simply the fact that this is debatable strenghtens my idea)……..we had so much history that we just can’t put it aside……….and that’s what defines europe, the fact that there really is no europe othar than “hey, i don’t know you, but we both wear t shirts”…………if i am yo make a comparison, europe would be the historical city centre ( of an european city , of course) , full of history and stuff, full of cafes, thetres, cinemas, museum…full of tourists and cobblestone roads…a city centre that makes you proud to be living there simply because others admire what you…posess……….while america would be the suburbs….simple, kind of roboticly geometrical…with small quiet houses and beautiful lawns…where richer people decide to live there lives and raise their children……and a few factories scattered in some areas………………………………………………i am european…but i am more a romanian…and that means that i get to make jokes (yeah racial, but innocent) about hungarian or bulgarian….if i were british i’d laugh at the germans or the french…..that doesn’t mean that i hate anyone….that’s the beauty of beeing european and it’s sth we understand……i actually believe budapest is the most beautiful city in europe…….even though our rish history fuels our nationalism…that only makes us proud of who we are…and the reality of the present makes us respect the others……while america is one big fatty, europe is a gang……but not really a team………….oh yes and if i want to see the alps all i have to do is travel a few hundred kilometres…then by nightfall i’m in a london club…next morning i see the sunrise in portugal and if i were to call back home my friends would also have just woken up……………america is just way to big and that makes it a less concentrated solution……though …it’s not that big the difference….just imagine an america where every state is a country and has it’s own language….and the cities look natural…and you have some landscape…and your roads have turns…and your cars steer…and ……..well that wouldn’t help either…..and it’s better that way……america is a big spice on the plate of the world……and even though the real americans are kept in reservations as if they were zoo attractions and you’re all just a bunch of irish and scots and polish and russians and sweeds and , of course, english……they left because they wanted to make sth better than the europe they lived in….i think they’d be proud….most of them…america is europe made by european with european knowledge and european tools aver the last 4 centuries….and it is still being made…history has shown that “the centre of the world” has changen many times aver the centuries….perhaps it’s america’s turn…but for god’s sake, do a better job if you try to convince us!!! but one thing is for clear….the world is not americanising ( and coca cola or burger king are just balls…people love to eat and drink)..america is beeing europeanised…little by little, we’re just extending the geo-cultural boundaries…and america is becoming the new neighbour far far away….we’re talking about america the same way our ancestors did about the british or the ottoman empire or even the roman empire…and you shopuld be proud of yourselves you scums!!!!

Europe vs. USA is kind of an unfair comparison, but since Americans (from the U.S.) tend to think they’re equal to Europe it is an acceptable comparison.
But Europe wins easiliy, there’s just no contest. Even if it was Europe vs. North-America, it would be about the same result.

That was a horribly composed comparison list.
    1) Comparing cities is idiotic, because every city, no matter how large or small, has unique charms and claims to fame. American cities and European cities are also two different animals. London or Moscow will never be NYC, San Franciso will never be Paris, Salzburg will always be Salzburg and Gary Indiana will continue to decay. Instead of hopelessly comparing these places, why not post some information that would actually prompt people (both American and European) to leave their continents? Personally, someplace like Telluride Colorado is just as awe-inspiring and amazing (in its own way) as someplace like Oberammergau.

    2) Michigan stadium is actually the largest stadium in the US, with a capacity of 109,901. Does it matter? No.

    3) The highest mountain in the US is actually Mt. McKinley in Alaska at 20,320 ft. (6194 m), just as Mt. Elbrus in Russia is the highest mountain in Europe at 18,510 ft. (5642 m). So why pick Mont Blanc and Mount Whitney? Why not compare Jungfrau and Mount Elbert? They’re both mountains as well. Why don’t we all hate on the Asians, as their mountains are higher than both of ours.

    4) Comparing the Beatles to Elvis? Really? Firstly, the Beatles are impossible to beat in terms of sales, popularity, worldwide recognition, or just about anything beyond personal taste (I have met a few people who don’t like them, as strange as that may seem. On that note, I’m sure we could go to Liverpool right now and find some kid in trainers and a baseball cap that prefers the Wu Tang Clan to the Beatles… Finding someone who dislikes Elvis is much easier.) Secondly, if you think that Elvis personifies American music, you’ve missed the last 50 years since he was popular and relevant. Thirdly, why only Anglophone music? And finally, don’t you think a much more interesting comparison of Europe vs America would be something like Strauss and Gershwin, or Mussogorsky and John Cage? Maybe Serge Gainsbourg and Waylon Jennings? Laibach and Jello Biafra?

    5) As someone commented earlier, comparing Shakespeare to F. Scott Fitzgerald is apples to oranges. You could have also compared Dante to Hunter Thompson, or Kafka to Vonnegut, or Douglas Adams to Herman Melville, or Philippa Gregory to Jaqueline Susann. Anyone who actually reads and enjoys it knows that there is amazing literature from every corner of the globe, and comparing one country’s literary output to another is the act of ill-read morons who can barely make their way through a train timetable.

    6) If you really want to prove the superiority of European film, why not cite Italian Neorealism or the French New Wave? People like Antonini, Rossellini, Godard, Truffaut, or for that matter Fellini, Tarkovsky or Bunuel would overshadow most any American filmmaker. Or if you really wanted to make a valid comparison how about Sergio Leone’s vs Sam Peckinpah?

    7) How about comparing Napoleon to William Tecumseh Sherman, whom B. H. Lidell Hart (a Brit, no less) actually ranked alongside Bonaparte as one of the most important strategists in the history of warfare. Washington was a mediocre general, but Sherman broke away from the stalemate bloodbaths that confounded Grant and Lee, with an eye to strategy that compares to Napoleon’s turning movements in the Ulm campaign that lead to his victory at Austerlitz. A much more interesting and valid comparison.

    8) Instead of bridges and cars, how about art, design and engineering? Is Bauhaus or PoMo architecture more influential? Dadaism or Abstract Expressionism? Unix vs Linux? Once again, the selection of two random bridges and two random cars is rather arbitrary. Which is better, a ’57 Cadillac or the Messerschmitt KR200?

    9) The sports? meh. At least pick athletes from the same damned sport.

  • Mojiferous

To (most) commentators: Arguing over Europe vs. USA is pretty pointless. This is mostly because, other than filling people with nationalistic rage, it really does nothing, since no country is going to go to war over not having enough castles or anything else like that.
As for the article itself: Comparison between the two is difficult. European countries have had hundreds and hundreds of years to accrue landmarks and build cities and empires. Even when governments changed, history was always a good way of instilling patriotism. America, on the other hand, has had about 500 years. Roughly 200 of that was spent just carving out a (European) culture for themselves. The USA was, and is, England’s (not the whole UK, mind you) son. Our culture is primarily British and French (society and gov’t, respectively). Most of our population is European. Europeans who CHOSE to move there. Usually, they wanted land and opportunity. They got both, and they used them. The USA (and perhaps Canada) is, some would say, itself an extension of Europe. If anything those European colonists should be thanked, they brought European culture to the rest of the world.
In short, Europe = long, long time to get to where it is; America = short amount of time, but tries hard and ends up setting standards.

For those wo doesn’t know russia is the only country that is spread along to different continents and the europe part of russia is betwen the border with ucraine and the ural mountains, and belive it or not Moscow is in that zone…so Moscow is in Europe…although the article is interesting but you realy can’t compare an country with an continent…beside US can win in comparation with countryes like Germany,Great Britan,France or even Spain.

  • Ghery

I wanted to say that US CAN’T win in comparation with ….

  • Artemis05

I’ll just put this out on the table… yes, I’m from the United States, however, I will agree that Europe has a greater wealth of culture. I am envious of that. But I’ve read many of these comments and seen repeated bashings of both the USA and Europe. What point does this prove? Attacking someone because of their nationality is as dumb as attacking them due to their religion or race or, hell, even because of their first name. Also, calling the US “power-hungry” right after stating that Europe had controlled most of the world makes no sense.

This article was just asking for trouble. Although, as an occasional instigator, I can appreciate it.

    Here are my choices:

Eiffle Tower- Both are wonderful pieces of art, but the Eiffle was supposed to have been torn down and survived.
Camp Nou- Football/soccer is the better sport
Snatch- I’ve never seen The Godfather and have no plans to do so in the future
Angelina Jolie- I have loved her in several movies
Mt. Whitney- No particular reason why. I just liked the picture of Whitney better.
    The Beatles- No contest.
Both- I haven’t been to D.C. or Moscow, but I’d like to
    Roger Federer- Golf bores me
Shakespeare- He’s more diverse. Plus, I love “Taming of the Shrew”
The Brooklyn Bridge- if it’d been a contest between New York and Budapest, I’d've chosen Budapest.
George Washington- As I said earlier, I’m from the US. Napoleon isn’t an option.
    Cadillac- I just like Caddies

  • sara

    just USA

  • Cosantoir

Let’s see, the US gave the world representative constitutional democracy. Mass production techniques that raised the standard of living of every farmer and worker, not just in the US but throughout much of the world. An altruistic foreign policy that has bled US taxpayers for decades to provide the military shield against aggression that enabled western Europeans’ welfare states.

Yes, let’s hear it for Europe’s stunning achievements… Nut why so shy about those European achievements like Feudalism and colonialism. The vile notion of “divine right of kings.” Religious intolerance and genocide. Marxism, Fascism, Naziism… Boy, those statues and football stadiums sure balance that out!

Let us know when Brazil’s got something to contribute beyond favelas, police death squads and waxing female crotches.

Did you mean such great american achivements like American Civil War, War of 1812, Vietnam War or maybe bombings Hiroshima and Nagasaki I don’t even mention “holy” Iraq War. This list isn’t even closed and in the future it’ll be constantly updated. Actually every nation has something to shame of, even Americans living in such big, great country where everything is better and bigger even the citizens and sometimes their pride and their shame.

The most important thing is that you cant compare things this way. Why Shakespeare, drama writer, and novellist? Why freedom fighter and conqueror (though for Polish people like me Bonaparte is also freedom fighter)? I dont think you even can compare US and Europe, becouse of language and cultural diversity in Europe. In European Union alone there are 25 countries with 15+ languages (without minorities, in Poland at least 4 exclusive minorities with own culture and language). And there are countries outside EU. Im not critisising, but I hope for discussion:) BTW My English is bad, I know…

Firstly, I love America and I love Europe. Every country has something to be ashamed of, but somehow you missed America’s most shame full claim to fame: the single largest Genocide in history. Forget Hitler and the Jews (killed 6 million) the American’s killed over 100,000,000 (one hundred million) native American’s during their colonization. So when “Cosantoir” (above) posted about Europe’s colonialism…let’s not throw stones if you live in a glass house – OK? Draw a line, and let’s move forward: together.

  • Anonymous

If you’re counting the US as an “extension of europe” then I’d recommend you started with countries in South America such as Argentina, Ecuador, Chile etc. where European influence (Spanish colonialism and to some extent Portuguese for Brazil) is blended with the older indigenous culture. This is reflected in the diversity (and mixing) of languages (Spanish and various Indigenous), in the architecture and in the racial mixtures of the populations.
These qualities, and the many more I haven’t listed, show Latin America as more akin to Europe than the United States. The mixture of older history and culture with the modern is a prominent feature of Europe (and Latin America) that the US doesn’t possess as most of your indigenous history was erased in the founding of the states.
It’s not a bad thing, I just thought your comparison was a bit off. Especially as Canada, as a bilingual commonwealth country, would be more European in my opinion. Although I do understand that many of the southern states have a lot of Spanish in them nowadays.

I agree with most others thought, comparing a continent to a country is peculiar.

  • random person

why compare an entire continent with a country….

  • Mozambique2011

Don’t you learn Geo at school?????
    Is that possible!!!

  • Mozambique2011

    Assim é que é falar cara….

  • Fake

Whoever wrote this article knows nothing about history, the united states, or Europe…

  • lolwot

Wth Moscow isnt part of Europe. This is failure as post.

  • ant0ni000

yes it is lying in the european part of russia!

  • Sidhs

You`re comparing Napolean, one of the greatest strategists of all time, to Washington a mediocre (actually kinda bad) military strategist but very good politician….. they`re not very similar.

  • Panda

The author talked about Moskow, not the whole of Russia.

Please, learn some geography! Russia is located in both Europe and Asia while Moskow is in the European part of it.

  • Tutor

Have you ever went at school? Moskow is geographically the part of Europe.

    Damn, must be embarassing!

  • Me

Stupid american!!!! Learn a thing or two before posting.

  • Ok

Moscow is in Europe … buy a map

  • Ok

why not mention up to date fin.crisis brought to us by the US? :D or that US have the highest criminalism in the world or 50% of US population lives in poor conditions and social healthcare is not guaranteed for everyone but only for those who PAY .. etc .. well can´t compare really :) and anyway US was built by Europeans so I don´t know what to compare .. better compare city vs city in this case ..

  • Ok

Moscow in Asia? :D must have been copied by the Chinese since I was on holiday ..

  • Ok

    may it be so …

  • M.Rom Hubbard

Why not compare countries that are more similar like Canada Vs. USA?
makes more sense than comparing one country to an entire continent.

my vote Canada, we atleast have geography classes

  • Fuckyou

America is so great it must be compared to all of Europe. a single country wouldn’t stand a chance.

  • K.K

Europe wins because there are 27 countries ! But it wins for sure. I’m no saying that US is crap ! I love the USA but europe is more a cultural country than the US sorry for that. And one more thing, for the person who posted Europe VS US, the Effeil tower is French just like the “Statue de la liberté” ! you compared two European things !

  • U.E

    Liked that one haha

  • K.K

It doesn’t matter, the country is NOT in the european part at ALL, so Moscow is not in europe :)

  • speggiorin

yeah yeah… so you think US are the top of everything
good for you, but your nation is arrogant!!! and
    like you!
and your comparision of Europe and US… let’s remind that the US economy boom was after the two world wars.
And you speak english!!!! not even a self language your country has…

PS. I write just a lil of english… before shot on me… I bet that you don’t speak even a sentence in my language!!! ahuahuahuauhhuah

  • ‘merica!

Now wait a secondé there Benboblio. You’re comparing a continent to a country. They’re using the best parts of 27 countries against 1 country. Besides, the US devotes more air power to popular football games than most countries devote to their “Air Force”.

  • ‘merica

so do we rtard… 10th grade world geography, and whatever higher education I haven’t gotten to yet.

  • Sidhs

    Dont be an ass

  • Gman

It is quite obvious that u’ve never been out of your so called “free” land, where u use a tshirt with an insult and you can go to jail for it. Where your civil rights and democracy have absolutely no value after 9/11 with the almighty anti terrorism law. But is fine, all countries had their up and downs. I do believe like you that royalty is quite nonsense but boy when u talk about fascism looks like your country had imported slaves form Africa and in the recent history. Or you forgot about the KKK? Or those phrases like “Latin is the new black” or “Arab is the new blac” came form nowhere? Can you spot the trend here man?

I don;t want to bash the US, as I said before, every country has its ups and downs. The only problem with the US is that you believe you can judge us all from a perspective that sadly barely represents u. I would like to know what would you do with just half of the oil you consume.

BTW I love waxed Brazilian crotches, thumbs up for that dude!

  • Lambeth

Hhahahah only 2 man! (In a country with 1.5 billion citizens wouldn’t be a lot right?) hahaah

  • Lambeth

I’m sad to inform you, that you are -partly- right. Europe is a continent, and AMERICA Also. So please, give a name to your sad country Instead of calling it for the entire continent where i live and i don’t really feel represented by you or any of your politics. Maybe, just maybe, if you respect your neighbors people will actually stop bashing/hating US Americans.
(BTW when I say get a name, I mean a proper name, just calling a country united states… doesn’t do much. There are other United states in other parts of the planet but they’ve been a little more creative in the end)

  • thouzie

The country has an european part! like Ok said: buy a map! (the Urals is the geo border between asia and russia, learned when i was about 10 years)

  • WalterJames

Europe is better than the United States, but that’s due to the vast cultural wealth and diversity. The fact that you could even compare the United States against an entire continent and have the United States fare at least partially well really goes to speak to its credit. With that said, however, there are numerous comparisons that were a tad silly. In the first place, if you’re comparing Washington, DC (the capital of the United States… obviously) to a city in Europe, it would stand to reason that you would opt for the cultural centre of Europe or at the very least the capital of one of its core nations. Berlin, perhaps, or Paris. Moscow is kind of out of left-field on that one.

I found myself favouring Europe in just about every comparison, but that’s because it’s a poorly weighted comparison. In any case, it’s nice to see that the wealth of American culture, a relative baby-nation when compared to the European whole, can stand up against European culture as a whole, even if it doesn’t beat them out in this extremely awkward list.

  • Bob

    Europe rulz, usa sucks

  • Anonymous

Moscow (Russia) is not in the European Union, therefore it is not technically part of Europe.

Nice to see for once though lots of Americans being thoughtful and nice (Kudo’s to you Americans), Europe is in a different league, when it comes to culture, art, food, architecture and many other things. Nearly 1500 hundred years head-start on the USA, but they put up a good fight anyway.

Lol, the statue of Liberty is in fact French, funny.

  • http://profiles.yahoo.com/u/ELCWV5ANDUEJ5D5PB35FL2LZ6Y Bildo

The United States is larger geographically that Europe, so the comparison is appropriate. We have fifty different states, each with its own capital, which brings their own culture and identity to the United States. We are also a nation of immigrants from all over the world. Men, women, and children that would brave oceans on homemade rafts in order to start a new life here, knowing that in this land they would have opportunities that would never be dreamed of in their homelands.

And yes, the Statue of Liberty was a gift from France to celebrate the truly American concept of individual liberty. Tell me, what has your nation done for the world to deserve such a gift?

Napoleon was fighting for conquest. Washington fought for independence and freedom.
Napoleon fought for one of the oldest, and most established, nations with infrastructure and a professional army. Washington fought for a nation that had not yet been formed with backwoodsmen, and shopkeepers as soldiers.

Most importantly: Napoleon lost. Washington won.

  • http://profiles.yahoo.com/u/ELCWV5ANDUEJ5D5PB35FL2LZ6Y Bildo

Statue of Liberty: It represents Liberty, there is nothing more important.
Cowboys Stadium: I’ve been there. It’s amazing. The photo in the article is of Texas Stadium, not the new Cowboys Stadium by the way.
The Godfather: Though I loved the movie Snatch. I liked Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels even more.
Monica Bellucci: Would have gone to Jolie if she wasn’t so damned weird.
Mont Blanc: Not really a contest here.
    Elvis.
Neither: Moscow vs Washington? That doesn’t even make sense. What is this, the Cold War?
Tiger: Because he gets all the chicks.
Shakespeare: If you have to question this, then you shouldn’t be allowed on the internet.
    Brooklyn Bridge.
Washington. – Napoleon lost. Washington Won.
Neither: BMW’s better than either one.

  • StanW

So KK, which part of Europe are you from: the part who’s ass we kicked or the part who’s ass we saved?

  • http://profiles.yahoo.com/u/ELCWV5ANDUEJ5D5PB35FL2LZ6Y Bildo

There are a lot of miserable parts of the US’ history that you could bring up. Unfortunately, you apparently don’t know any of them.

If somebody went to jail, it wasn’t over a tshirt. Freedom of speech is the most important of our rights, the KKK is proof of it. They are hated here, yet still allowed to exist because they do have the fundamental right to piss everybody off. The patriot act isn’t nearly as bad as the Leftist want you to believe. Slavery is the worst part of our history, but those slaves were introduced and imported by European slave traders so it’s not like Europe gets bonus points over it. I’ve never heard either of the phrases you quote up there, and they aren’t something you would hear in even the most backwoods part of the U.S.

“I would like to know what would you do with just half of the oil you consume.”
We’d invade and take yours, of course.. :)

We both agree on the waxed crotch thing. Good job, Brazil.

  • http://profiles.yahoo.com/u/ELCWV5ANDUEJ5D5PB35FL2LZ6Y Bildo

100 million? Do you think that the United States invaded Mexico, Canada, Central and South America in order to slaughter their native tribes? Most estimates show the entire population of the Western Hemisphere in 1492 to be between 80 and 100 million. Sorry, but there were about 20 million in what is now the United States, and 95% died from smallpox, not slaughter.

  • Desertfox Kg

    Oh…

So Switzerland is not in the European Union, therefore it is not technically part of Europe?

Norway too? Island? Serbia? Croatia? Bosnia? Macedonia? Montenegro? Albania?

  • Desertfox Kg

    Oh…

So Switzerland is not in the European Union, therefore it is not technically part of Europe?

Norway too? Island? Serbia? Croatia? Bosnia? Macedonia? Montenegro? Albania?

  • Desertfox Kg

Which part of the Europe you ass kicked please?

  • Anything

Vast cultural wealth? As if the Americas had no cultural wealth until Europeans came?

  • StanW

Perhaps if you were to actually learn some world history, your questions would be better formed.

  • XanSa

Europe wins straight except for Angelina Jolie…

  • Mmm

“For those wo doesn’t know russia is the only country that is spread along to different continents”

    ¿Turkey? ¿Egypt?

“beside US can win in comparation with countryes like Germany,Great Britan,France or even Spain.”

Maybe with that countries, but Finland or Sweden are the best places to live.

  • American asshole

Is the part of Europe which u kicked in ass and rape. U say we will saved u but then comes uncle Stalin and said “This is main” and u mighty amricans said” Yes of course, yes yes yes, please do not beat us”. So stfu. Jauta and Poczdam is shame for u.

  • http://profiles.yahoo.com/u/ELCWV5ANDUEJ5D5PB35FL2LZ6Y Bildo

Yes, we could have continued the World War, and cost the world another 50 million lives over Eastern Europe I guess…

At that point in time, the only way to save Eastern Europe was to wage atomic war against the Soviets, and I have a feeling that you would condemn us for that as well.

  • Drunk Chris

The fact that a single country being put up against a whole continent pretty much makes this a no-brainer to begin with.

Hell, California alone could compete with at least 75% of this list.

Europe is a great place, with a loooong history. I mean, the Vatican museum in 100 times better than any museum than you would find in the U.S. But at the same time, everything there pre-dates the U.S. by at LEAST 100 years. So kind of an unfair comparison in my opinion.

  • Lafrenlafra

I like your question…. Go to school, freshman…
Moscow is not in the EU but geographically it is considered to be a European part!

  • Lafrenlafra

Excuse me, I am just interested what country are you from? Seriously… 1+1=2, 2×2=4, Georgia is a state, Georgia is a country as well, Russia is the country that has 2 parts, one is Europe, one is Asia. So, Moscow, you like it or not, is Europe, Eastern Europe, and you are just not educated, sorry about it…

  • Lafrenlafra

You heard about just Cold War? Dude… move on!!! Have you ever been in Moscow, St Basils Cathedral is one of world wonders!
I live in Washington DC and I say that neither Capitol nor Washington memorial look so amazing as Moscow monuments!
USA is a young country, it’s nice…in its way but all the culture, all the great buildings are in Europe, Just one Roma has 90% of art!

  • Cello

Since when Russia is in Europe? Federer is Russian and Moscow is the Russian capital city.

Russia is in Asia, not in Europe, although they do many things with Europe (like they play on the European Soccer Championship or on European competitions). Only if you consider Eurasia a continent, but still if won’t be just Europe.

    Cheers!

  • Cello

European Union is not Europe. Desertfox Kg is right.

  • Cello

I have made an error. Federer is from Switzerland… Sorry!!! He is European.

  • Harsh

The majority of the Russian populace lives in Europe. European Russia is west of the Urals (this is where Europe ends, geographically). And even if you don’t want to count that, part of Russia (Kaliningrad) lies even further west into Europe.

  • Kaitlin

I find it hilarious that they can’t even seem to find fully American things to compare to European things. Snatch was made by a BRITISH director, and the French made the Statue of Liberty…it just lives here.

  • Random

And half of Russia is European too. Learn geography.

  • Random

And what remains of this cultural wealth from before the Europeans came? Mmm, it’s busy running casinos.

  • Guido

ummmmm Snatch was the EUROPEAN entry, compared to Scarface
