The very first step to garden making is spot selection. But if you do not have many choices, then probably you would have to go with a box garden. As of course, you have heard the idiom, something is at least better than nothing.
But assuming the best, let’s suppose that we have ample choice and can choose the right site according to our needs. In this the biggest determinant is the sun. Keeping the sun in mind, nobody would choose a north corner by free will. That is so because, though north corners are fine for ferns, or some wild flowers, etc. but they aren’t good spots for the purpose of a general garden.
A southern exposure spot is the best, where the sunlight is ample. In such a garden, vegetable and flower rows ought to run north and south. This way the plants will receive sun’s rays on eastern side during morning hours and on western side during afternoon hours. With this kind of an arrangement, lopsided plants should be avoided.If the garden is southeast facing, the best sunlight distribution is achieved if the rows run northwest and southeast. The broad idea here is getting maximum sunlight, evenly distributed for maximum number of hours.
The lopsided way the window plants grow is ample evidence of the effect that poor light availability has on plant growth. 
So, a simple handmade diagram and basic common sense and deliberation can help you work the best way to plant your garden. New spots of gardening are found either covered with turf or covered with rubbish. In garden areas of large size, the sod is turned under by ploughing, however, in smaller gardens the sod ought to be removed. For sod removal, the garden spot needs to be staked and lined off. The line ensures an accurately straight course to be followed. Now, using a spade cut the edges along the line.
For a small area this may be easy. But for a larger plot, what can be done is that you can turn the sod with the grass side underneath so that it may rot and weather, turning into a fine fertilizer. A pile of this kind composed of rotting vegetables and stuff is known as compost pile. Adding the rotting vegetables in summer and dead leaves of autumn will prepare a fine compost pile for the next season.
