Leningrad Now And Then

Date: February 1, 2009

Saint Petersburg is located on the Neva River at the head of the Gulf of Finland on the Baltic Sea. The city’s other names were Petrograd (1914–1924) and Leningrad (1924–1991). The most tragic period in the history of this city is undoubtedly the 900-day Siege of Leningrad, a period full of suffering and heroism. For everyone who lives in St. Petersburg the Blokada (the Siege) of Leningrad is an important part of the city’s heritage and a painful memory for the population’s older generations.

An unknown artist has made this unique photos combing the photos of Leningrad today, and the photos of this city from the period of the notorious blockade when the Soviet Union was attacked by Nazi Germany. It lasted from September 8 1941 until January 27 1944. Here it is made obvious for all how deep affect this has left on people’s mind and how vivid it still is.

Paper Sculptures

Date: January 31, 2009

These fine paper sculptures are made by the Eckman family, Allen and Petty. For years they are working with this sort of fine art. His inexhaustible inspiration and the spring of ideas are Native American Indians. Allen has a great interest in the Native American Indian partly because his great-great grandmother was a Cherokee. “I really am interested in the Indian’s material, physical and spiritual culture and that whole period of our nation’s history I find fascinating. From the western expansion, through the Civil War and beyond is of great interest to me.” Eckman has expanded his work through all these subjects .

Patty has a great interest in wildlife, birds and flowers in particular. “Ever since I was a child I have had a great appreciation of wildlife. I can sit for hours and watch the birds come to my feeder. When I look at a flower I don’t see just color, I see form. Wonderful shapes that the color tries to overpower.” Patty also has interests in the Native American culture and since the year 2000 has been sculpting beautiful Indian woman and children. On large complicated and detailed works the couple often work together and both sign the piece when completed.

kazakhstans futuristic pyramid01 Kazakhstans Futuristic Pyramid

Since 2006, kazakhstan’s new capital city of astana, itself an enormous hub of construction since it inherited the title in 1997, has been home to one of the world’s most impressive and visually futuristic pyramids, known as the palace of peace and reconciliation. it was designed by british super-architects foster + partners, cost 8.74 billion kazakh tenge (i don’t need to tell you bright young humans that this equates to approx. £35m) and was built to accommodate the triennial ‘congress of world and traditional religions’. if there was ever a positive to be found for the existence of the idiocy we know and love as religion, this building could be it, as after an impressively rapid 2 years of design and construction, the end product is a masterpiece.

Even the people who are not really into fashion will surely find these photos truly beautiful and breathtaking. Michael Sanders has proved that beauty can be found everywhere. He chose this unique scenery of countryside for presenting this fancy designers clothes. I especially liked the effect of roughness and pure nature which he managed to capture thanks to perfect combination of light and shadows with minimal use of colors.
